Friendship

by Elliekin

The stars are veiled, the night without end,

And still I walk with you, my friend,

Till together we reach the end of night

And step into the dear Sun’s light.

At times I feel I cannot cope,

And every step seems without hope,

And on the way I stop and stare

Into the dark and filthy air

And think: will the night ever end?

Or are there hurts that cannot mend?

These wounds go deep; this burden gnaws;

I falter and you see me pause.

You hold my hand and smile and say:

“We can, we will, we’ll find the Day.”

I don’t miss you.

There’s no dark, empty space where you used to be.

It’s not as if I lie awake at night, crying for you.

And if I hear a knock at the door

or a tread on the stair

I never rush out, thinking, hoping, praying you’re there.

I can live without you.

I never wake up and think, what’s the point without you?

I can stop crying.

I don’t miss you.
